Monthly Learning at CGLA

Each month during the school year we partner with Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy to do some ecology based learning through their workplace mentorship program. Some of our high school students and one of our staff spend 2 hours engaging in hands on, creative, and facilitated activities to explore the complex topics surrounding environmentalism, ecology, and urban sustainability. This month we explored the idea of common resources, learned about the “Tragedy of the Commons” and discussed how this idea is complex and flawed. We then used that conversation to lead us into some activities exploring environmental racism and environmental justice.

Moving the conversations we are having at school into the community is exciting and vital to our structure and mission at REconnect. We don’t live in a bubble, and we will never be able to see or understand every point of view. Having more conversations in more places and with more people expands our minds and understandings, and sparks the excitement in our students to be forever learners and make real change in the world!
